Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred and Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah headline a strong Caribbean contingent for Tuesday’s Gyulai István Memorial, with several regional stars set to compete at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.
Alfred and Thompson-Herah will renew their rivalry in the women’s 100 metres, one of the marquee events on the Budapest program. Alfred arrives after a sensational 21.51-second victory over 200m at the Monaco Diamond League, while Thompson-Herah continues her return to international competition.
Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce is among the entries for the women’s 200m, where she will line up against world champion Gabby Thomas, Kayla White and Anavia Battle.
The Caribbean will also be well represented in the women’s 400m hurdles. Jamaicans Rushell Clayton and Shiann Salmon are entered alongside Olympic finalist Jasmine Jones and Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya in another event expected to produce fast times.
In the field events, Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith leads the provisional entries in the women’s long jump based on personal best and will be aiming to continue her impressive season against an international field.
Elsewhere, Olympic champion Masai Russell faces European leader Nadine Visser in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Britain’s Laura Muir, Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma, Australia’s Abbey Caldwell and American Heather MacLean headline the women’s 1,500m.
World champion Nicola Olyslagers opens her European season in the high jump against fellow Australian Eleanor Patterson.
The women’s pole vault features Olympic champion and world leader Nina Kennedy, who will take on New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney, Imogen Ayris and Olivia McTaggart, along with Slovenia’s Tina Šutej.
