Record Sprint Depth, Big Absences: Jamaica Women’s 100m Trials Set for Kingston

Jamaica has produced 11 women under 11 seconds in the 100m this season, the most in a single season, but only 21 athletes are listed to face the starter at this weekend’s Jamaica National Senior, Junior and Age Group Championships in Kingston.

The senior women’s 100m preliminaries are scheduled for Friday at 8:10 p.m. EDT, with one of the deepest sprint fields the country has seen in recent years.

However, the field will be without Shenese Walker, the fastest Jamaican woman this season at 10.80. Walker, the newly crowned NCAA women’s 100m champion and NCAA Indoor 60m champion, confirmed she will miss the Jamaica Trials after a standout season with Florida State.

When asked whether she will be at Trials, Walker simply said, “no.” She did not provide any further details.

Brianna Lyston, who has a season best of 10.94, and Briana Williams, will also be missing in action. Gabrielle Matthews, who finished sixth in the NCAA women’s 100m and fourth in the 200m, will also miss the Jamaica Trials. Matthews has run 10.97 this season, making her one of the 11 Jamaican women under 11 seconds in 2026.

Even without Walker and Matthews, the women’s 100m remains loaded.

Tia Clayton carries the top season best mark in the field at 10.85, making the 22-year-old one of the main names to watch heading into the heats. Her twin sister, Tina Clayton, is listed second at 10.91, setting up the possibility of another strong showing from the MVP Track and Field Club pair.

Shericka Jackson returns to the national stage seeded third at 10.88, which was achieved twice in 2025. The 32-year-old MVP sprinter is a former world 200m champion and remains one of Jamaica’s most dangerous championship performers.

Elaine Thompson-Herah, the two-time Olympic 100m champion, enters with 10.92 alongside Sabrina Dockery – both done this season. Thompson-Herah, competing for Elite Performance Track Club, remains one of the most decorated sprinters in the sport, while Dockery, whose 10.92 is a personal best, brings youth and speed into a stacked field.

Ashanti Moore of Sprintec Track Club is listed at 10.94, followed by LaVanya Williams of Dynamic Speed Track Club at 10.95. Jodean Williams, also of Sprintec, enters at 10.97, while Kemba Nelson and Jonielle Smith are both listed at 10.99.

MVP has strong representation, with the Clayton twins, Jackson, Smith and Chante Clinkscale among its entries.

Clinkscale, who is listed at 11.19, is American.

Further down the field, Niesha Burgher enters at 11.18, Serena Cole is listed at 11.22, Shashalee Forbes at 11.23, and Natasha Morrison and Krystal Sloley at 11.28. Jura Levy, Tri-tania Lowe, Shanoya Oliver and Vidita Vidal complete the listed field.

Jamaica does not have a global outdoor championship such as the Olympic Games or World Championships this season, but the Commonwealth Games remains the biggest meet on the 2026 calendar. The remaining major meets include the PanAm Senior Championships from June 26-28 in Medellin, Colombia; the Commonwealth Games from July 27 to August 1 in Glasgow, Scotland; the CAC Games from August 2-8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and the World Athletics Ultimate Championships from September 11-13 in Budapest, Hungary.
