NASSAU, Bahamas – The Thomas A Robinson National Stadium is undergoing a significant $36 million refurbishment, funded by the Chinese government, in preparation for the prestigious World Athletics Relays scheduled for May 4-5.

With the World Athletics Relays on the horizon, the stadium, a landmark facility originally presented as a gift by China ten years ago, is receiving timely renovations. The Youth, Sports and Culture Minister of The Bahamas, Mario Bowleg, acknowledged the support from the People’s Republic of China, stating, “These repairs are taken on by the People’s Republic of China as this was a gift given to The Bahamas some ten years ago and as you can see the repairs are needed. We thank them for their commitment to ensuring that they bring this facility back up to A1 standard so that we can continue holding international events and using these facilities as a development of our young people.”
This renovation not only reinforces the stadium’s status as an international athletics venue but also underlines the enduring partnership between The Bahamas and China. The completion of the repairs, expected at least two weeks before the event, ensures that Nassau will meet the necessary standards to successfully host the World Athletics Relays for the fourth time.
The initiative is part of a broader vision for the country’s sports infrastructure, aimed at fostering the development of Bahamian youth in athletics. With the stadium’s update, Nassau is poised to continue its tradition of facilitating world-class sporting events.
