Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce turned the tables on Olympic Games champion Elaine Thompson-Herah in Lausanne

MONACO – The Wanda Diamond League still has one leg before the European Championships start – the EBS Herculis in the running paradise of Monte Carlo, close to the sea in clean air conditions.

Organizers have billed this year’s meet as clashes of champions in the women’s 100 meters, men’s 200 meters, men’s 1000 meters, men’s high jump, and men’s 110-meter hurdles. Fast middle distance times are expected as always, this time from the main attraction, Kipyegon in the 1500 meters. In total, 12 individual gold medalists from Oregon22 feature in 15 events.

Monaco Diamond League Event-by-event short previews

200 meters: There’s Noah Lyles vs Michael Norman, but Erriyon Knighton with Fahnbulleh make it a super field – Lane 5 Norman, 6 Knighton, 7 Lyles. Interestingly, Lyles has lost only three times outdoors in the 200 meters since 2016. One of these races was to Norman by 0.02 in 2019.

1000 meters: Wightman comes down from 1500 meters, Korir goes up from 800 meters. The Briton has more experience with a 2:16.27 personal best; the Kenyan does not have a comparable time. Here, Arop can beat them all, with the meet record only 2:17.42. A world lead is also achievable in 2:17.13 but the  Diamond League record of 2:49.13 is much harder to reach.

3000 meters: Great depth, with Eugene silver medalist Krop to prove himself against a strong group headed by Lobalu who was not in Eugene and is the world leader.

110-meter hurdles: Grant Holloway vs Hansle Parchment, who have only run together in the Tokyo Olympics. Now they clash again with Trey Cunningham in his pro debut.

High jump: Olympic brothers Mutaz and Tamberi will duel, but the big addition to the mix is Woo.

Long jump: Tentoglou wants to continue his Diamond League winning streak, but needs to improve as rivals come  through Montler,  Shreeshankar and Gayle with youngsters Konate and Furlani in tow.

100 meters: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce vs Shericka Jackson. They’ve had several races since Eugene already, but the track here is fast. The 10.72 meet record is under threat. In direct clashes, Shericka has never beaten Shelly-Ann so far over 100 meters.

400 meters: Shaunae Miller-Uibo will have to fight with an in-shape Commonwealth Games winner Williams.

800 meters (non-DL): In top shape, Sage Hurta can go under 1:58, which would be her personal best. World champion Nakaayi seeks satisfaction after Eugene.

1500 meters: Should Kipyegon use the Monaco 1500-meter tradition and attack even the best-ever result?

3000-meter steeplechase: Ethiopian Getachew will try for fast time. Can she handle the favorite’s position?

400-meter hurdles: Jamaicans Janeive Russell and Rushell Clayton with Woodruff to test Ryzhykova and Kloster ahead of the European Championships.

Pole vault: Athletes who finished 2-3-4-5 in Eugene are present; Morris and Kennedy to enjoy, with a top test for Sutej and Stefanidi before Munich.

Triple jump: Rojas against herself, her run-up and technique. The rest will battle for other places, but Ricketts is in shape.

Javelin: Kitaguchi has 2 out of 2 in the Diamond League, but Barber is the world champion and Commonwealth Games winner.
