The man with most Olympic participation in athletics will continue into 2021. Spanish walker Jesus Angel Garcia told El Mundo Deportivo he plans to stay on for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
Garcia, who has so far completed at seven Olympic Games, wanted to end his long career after Tokyo 2020, but now is ready to do it in 2021. The Tokyo 2020 event was postponed to 2021 because of the Coronavirus.
“I understand that Tokyo 2021 will be the last 50 km walk to be carried out, and that is where I have marked myself to continue,” explained the walker.
“I will continue fighting to be able to end my career in Tokyo. I do not want the Coronavirus to cut me off from that endpoint,” said the legendary athlete who will be 51 by then.
Garcia also said he wants to participate in the last 50 km walk in the Olympic history as it is expected Paris 2024 will have shorter distance on the programme.
