BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa – Olympic winner and World record holder Wayde Van Niekerk ran his first race, on Monday (17 Feb), since 2017.

The South African has not competed on the international circuit since suffering a knee injury while participating in a celebrity rugby match on the same weekend he got married.

At University of Free State (UFS) meet in Bloemfontein, Van Niekerk ran 10.2, hand-timed 10.2 on grass, in his first race at 100m since 2017.

He also ran 1:57 in the 800m with a fast finish. Both races were training runs for the South African sprinter.

“Grateful to see him healthy and back on track doing what he does best,” tweeted his agent Peet Van Zyl.

Van Niekerk’s first real competition of the year will be on Feb 28-29 at regional championships in Bloemfontein where he will run the 400m.

Then he plans two more races before South African National Championships April 23-25.
