Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organizers are “seriously worried” because of the fast-spreading coronavirus.

Several sporting events, mostly in China, have been cancelled or postponed due to the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak in China.

“Seriously worried that spreading of the infectious disease could throw cold water on the momentum towards the Games”, was how
Chief Executive Officer of Tokyo 2020, Toshiro Muto, described the situation.

The novel coronavirus is airborne and is likely spread in the same way as the flu — through coughing and sneezing — and direct contact with people with an active infection.

The Games of the XXXII Olympiad Olympiad is set for July 24 to August 9.

Muto said the organizers will continue to work closely with the IOC, IPC, the Japanese government and Tokyo Metropolitan government.

The Mayor of the Olympic Village, Saburo Kawabuchi, is hoping the virus won’t disrupt the smooth staging of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

  • Does anyone think the Coronavirus will actually bring down the Olympic Games? It has already affected the Indoor World Championships. However, that was actually scheduled to be hosted in China, this is for a different country altogether( albeit a country in the same region)
