Jamaica’s Beijing 2008 Olympic Games 100m silver medallist Sherone Simpson is preparing to help athletes realize their dreams.
Simpson, who recently announced her retirement from track and field, said she wants to serve in the psychology part of sports.
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games 200m champion said Jamaica has many talents, but “the focus is always on the training, the physical part of it, and the mental aspect of it is (being) ignored.”
She used schoolboy football as an example, explaining that teams will generally perform well early but struggle later down in the competition.
Simpson, who helped Jamaica to 4x100m gold at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, said this happened, “not because they are not physically ready, but because they are not mentally prepared.”
“I want to go back to school to study sports psychology,” she was quoted by the Jamaica Gleaner saying.
Simpson doesn’t believe enough sports psychologists are in Jamaica, and that’s why according to her she thinks her “experience in track and field will also help me to drive home a point to young athletes because I have gone through it already.”
The former Manchester High student also said she wasn’t ready to hang up her spikes yet, but being a mother, proved too challenging to continue.
“I wanted to be there to help her with her schoolwork, and my commitment to training wouldn’t allow that,” the London 2012 Olympics 4x100m silver medallist while adding driving back and forth between Kingston and Spanish Town two times per day was tough.
“Leanna is in prep school now, I had to ensure that I was there for her daily activities,” she said of her daughter.

I think this is a great idea by Sherone and I wish her well as she seeks to qualify herself. This field can certainly use this kind of expertise.
