Kevona Davis to open season in three weeks time

Jamaica’s rising sprinter Kevona Davis is in “excellent shape” and “injury-free” heading into the 2020 track and field season.

Davis, due to injuries, for the past two seasons, missed out on representing Jamaica at the World U20 and World Championships.

In 2017 she pulled up and hopped across the line for 3rd in the girls’ 100m at World Youth Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

She ran a personal best of 11.16 in 2018 to win the Class 2 girls’ final at Champs, but later withdrew from the Jamaica Junior Trials and subsequently missed the World U20 in Finland.

Again in 2019, Davis equalled her personal best of 11.16 to win at Champs. She was seen as a strong contender for a place on Jamaica’s 4x100m team to Doha 2019 World Championships, but again missed Trials with injuries.

Davis’ coach, Michael Dyke was quoted by the Jamaica Gleaner saying, “Kevona is in excellent shape as she is injury-free and is raring to go.”

Dyke added: “She will have a very dominant season this year once again. Her preparation is being geared for the IAAF World Under 20 Championships and the Tokyo Olympic Games.”

Davis, who stepped up in class this year, will have strong competition from Ashanti Moore of Hydel High. Moore won Class 1 in 2019 in a personal best 11.17s.

Davis, however, will not open her later until late January or early February.

“She really wants to compete now, but I am holding back on her,” said Dyke while adding “most likely she will make her first appearance towards the end of the month.”

Dyke is looking at one of two meets, the St. Elizabeth Invitational (Jan 25) and Youngster Goldsmith (Feb 1), for Davis’ opening race.
