Jamaica’s three competitors in the Olympic Games women’s 800 metres failed to advance beyond the heats on Wednesday (Aug 17) at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Natoya Ghoule was the best placed Jamaican, as she finished third in heat eight, with both Simoya Campbell, running in heat six and Kenia Sinclair in heat seven, finishing seventh.
Goule tried to steal a place in the semifinals by taking the lead at the start. However, her rivals tracked patiently, until the final 200 metres when Francine Niyonsaba Burundi made her move and past her. Needing to finish at least second to secure one of the automatic qualifying spots for the semifinals, Goule held off Lovisa Lindh of Sweden for another 100 metres, before being passed at the top of the straight.
She finished in 2:00.49 minutes as Niyonsaba won in 1:59.84 with Lindh finishing second with 2:00.04 and Cuba’s
Like Goule, Campbell went in front from the start and actually led until the final 100 metres, when failing legs allowed six of her rivals to pass her. She was clocked in 2:02.07 minutes as the race was won by Angelika Chichocka of Poland in 2:00.42 with Yusneysi Santiusti of Italy finishing second in 2:00.45 and Cuba’s Rose Almanza third in 2:.00.50.
Sinclair ran a different race as she raced with the pack throughout and ended up doing 2:03.76 minutes in a race won by Joanna Jozwik of Poland who did 2:01.58. Second went to Winny Chebet of Kenya who was clocked at 2:01.65 and third going to Esther Guerrero of Spain who did 2:01.85.
Kenyan’s are getting better at short distance (they are making inroads on the 400m). Jamaica still sux at mostly anything beyond 200m
