Last year's Beijing World Championships 200m silver medal winner, Elaine Thompson opened her on Saturday, January 30.
Thompson ran 7.17 secs to top the women’s 60m field at the 15th staging of the Queens/Grace Jackson Invitational held at the National Stadium in Kingston. “I was pleased with my final 20 metres,” she said. She continued “I got out a bit slow. I am really happy to be competing before my fans again and I am looking forward to the remainder of the season.”
GC Foster College’s Audra Segree, who won heat 3, was second overall with 7.18secs. Shimayra Williams of UTech was third overall in 7.21, while Bahamian, MVP athlete Sheniqua Ferguson, the winner of heat 1, was timed in 7.24.
from heat 3 of the men’s equivalent, GC Foster College’s Oshane Bailey topped the field in 6.60 ahead of UTech’s Ronald Levy 6.62, Julian Forte of MVP 6.63 and Andrew Fisher, also of MVP, 6.78. Trinidad and Tobago’s Emmanuel Callender, representing UWI, was 9th in 6.82.
The women’s 200m saw Sprintec’s Anastasia Le-Roy finishing ahead of World Championships 400m bronze medallist Shericka Jackson of UTech 22.87 to 22.95
Stephenie-Ann McPherson of MVP was third in 23.15 and Sashalee Forbes of GC Foster College, 4th in 23.46.
Trinidad and Tobago’s 400m hurdler Sparkle McKnight, who is training with MVP, finished 5th in 24.21. Sisters Ristananna Tracey of Sprintec 24.31 (7th) and Nikita Tracey of MVP 25.70 (15th) were also a part of the women’s 200m.
Brandon Tomlinson of GC Foster College was the fastest of the 200m men on the day. He was the only one to break 21 second with 20.91. Demish Gaye, Tomlinson’s teammate, finished 2nd in 21.05 with Rusheen McDonald of MVP, 3rd in 21.09.
Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby of Sprintec 52.87 topped the women’s 400m ahead of Ronda Whyte of GC Foster College 53.07. Also in the race were Verone Chambers 53.28, Dawnalee Loney 54.07, Jonique Day 54.55, Simoya Campbell 54.62, Samantha James 55.07 and Jura Levy 56.27.
Edino Steele of Racers was the top man in the men’s 400m after crossing the line in 46.39. Nasive Powell of GC Foster College was 2nd in 46.91 while Anguillan, Zharnel Hughes, representing Racers TC, was 3rd in 47.12. Delano Williams, who was a member of Great Britain’s 4x400m relay team in Beijing, was 10th overall in 48.31.
