Asafa runs WL 9.84, Thompson wins 100m at Jamaica Invitational

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former World Record holder Asafa Powell signaled his return following up his win in Guadeloupe with a World Leading of 9.84sec at the Jamaica International Invitational  meet at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.

Powell, who has been consistent on a comeback trail of sorts, held off challenges from start to finish with his customary lightening moves out the blocks. Ryan Bailey (USA) 9.93 who was booed during his introduction had to settle for the second place, while a staple on Jamaicas 4×100 Nesta Carter took 3rd place in 9.98seconds.

In the women’s version Jamaican Elaine Thompson continued her sub 11 season and dominance with a 10.97 victory over a strong field which included Common Wealth Champion Blessing Okabare 11.05 and Alyson Felix 11.09.

Earlier in the nights activities, Bershawn Jackson running in the middle of the track covered his opponents early and maintained his Batman form for a solid 48.47 victory in the mens 400iH. Challenger Leford Green had to settle for the second place finish.

Kori Carter USA made good with a 55.12 in a close womens version of the 400H holding off Janieve Russel 55.29 for 2nd and Tiffany Williams 55.35.

In the field events: The women’s Triple Jump saw a new meeting record and world leading by Columbias Caterine Ibarguen as she landed in the sand pit at 14.61m.

Men's Shotput-Odane Richards really looked in good form 20.48m as he battled the challenges from American Ryan Whiting. However the night would belong to Christian Cantwell USA with a heave of 21.08m.
