Athletics Canada named 25 athletes today to the team that will compete May 2-3 at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas. Canada will field teams in the men’s and women’s 4×100-metres and 4×400-metres as well as in the women’s 4×800-metres.

The IAAF World Relays serve as a qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games. The inaugural edition of the event was held in 2014, also in the Bahamas. Last year the event saw 470 competitors, the second edition is expected to attract over 600 athletes from around the world.

The Canadian team, except for the women’s 4-x800-metres, will get a chance to test their readiness ahead of the IAAF World Relays this weekend in Philadelphia at the Penn Relays.

This weekend’s Penn Relays will mark the first national team competition for the relay program since the tragic passing of Daundre Barnaby. Barnaby would have competed at the Penn Relays and the IAAF World Relays as part of team Canada in the men’s 4×400-metres. He was laid to rest Saturday morning with his teammates in attendance. It’s not too late to help the Barnaby family cope with final expenses and a project to ensure his name lives on forever, details here.
