A decision to name the new sports complex at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in the honour of track and field hero Usain Bolt has been met with criticisms.

Barbadians believe the sports facility, which is situated at Paradise Park in Black Rock, St Michael, should be named after Olympic bronze medallist Obadale Thompson, fellow Olympian Jim Wedderburn or other distinguished Barbadian sports personalities.

However, Principal at UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, has defended the decision, saying it wasn’t to “marginalise any Barbadian sports person”

He said it was a move that celebrated all West Indians.

UWI Mona Campus, based in Kingston, Jamaica, named its cricket stadium Barbadian Sir Frank Worrell.
