American Ronnie Baker proved too hot for Jamaicans Asafa Powell and Omar McLeod at Saturday’s (Feb 3) 111th NYRR Millrose Games.
McLeod, the world indoor men’s 60m hurdles champion, finished 5th in 6.63 while Powell, the sub-10 king, ended 6th in 6.69. Baker, who ran from lane 4, was first across the line in 6.48 ahead of compatriot Noah Lyles, 6.59.
In the women’s event, Jamaican Schillonie Calvert-Powell was 5th in 7.29secs. Murielle Ahoure, the indoor specialist from Ivory Coast, won this event in 7.11 ahead of American world 100m champion, Tori Bowie, 7.14.
In the women’s 300m, one and a half lap around the track, Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, blew away the field to win in 35.45. She finished well ahead of Canadian Sage Watson, 37.08.
Jamaica’s success, however, came in the women’s 3,000m, thanks to the effort of Aisha Praught-Leer.
Praught-Leer, who ran the first 200m in 34.63, passed the 1,000m mark in 2:57.03 and 5:52.72 at 2,000m, won the event in 8:41.10.
In the men’s equivalent, Kemoy Campbell was not as lucky, finishing 8th in 7:47.43.
Monique Morgan, in the women’s 60m hurdles, beat some big names, but her 7.90 effort was only good enough for 4th place.
Americans Tobi Amusan, 7.90, Kristi Castlin, 8.02 and Queen Harrison, 8.03 were the top three finishers while their compatriots Kori Carter, 8.10, Dawn Harper Nelson, 8.18 and Lolo Jones, 8.37, ended 5th, 6th and 7th respectively.
Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago, 47.24 seconds, was third in the men’s 400m, won by Michael Cherry of USA in 46.46.
In the women’s 4x800m relay, Jamaica with Fellan Ferguson, 2:05.32 split, Simoya Campbell, 2:02.13, Kimarra McDonald, 2:07.04 and Natoya Goule, 2:03.27, finished 3rd in 8:17.75.
USA (Chrishuna Williams, Raevyn Rogers, Charlene Lipsey and Ajee’ Wilson) won the event in 8:05.89.
