“I am always optimistic,” said Yohan Blake in an interview with the Jamaica Observer as he prepares for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.

“I don’t like to tell people what I can do, and so I just stay optimistic, and whatever happens, happens. I just like to be behind the scenes like the national trial last year and just come and surprise.”

Blake, who is the second-fastest man ever in the 100m with a time of 9.69, won two silver medals in the 100m and 200m at the London 2012 Olympic Games, both times finishing behind his compatriot and former club teammate Usain Bolt, who holds the world record with a time of 9.58.

He went on to say, “This sets me up good because last year I didn’t start so well, but this year I started good, and so this is very good.”

Reflecting on his recent performance in the 60m race at the Camperdown Classic, Blake noted, “It is different, and it feels a bit weird, but I feel good nevertheless.”

Blake normally opens his season over 400 meters, but according to the 2022 national 100m champion, “those days are done for me.”

Blake expressed that he is feeling healthy and doesn’t have any minor physical issues. He also mentioned that he is excited to start the season, and this is his first time competing in a 60-meter race as a professional athlete, which makes him feel optimistic. Although there is still room for improvement, he is content with his performance, given that this is his first race and he has yet to dedicate much time to speed training.
