Donald Trump has taken the controversy surrounding the NFL to a whole new sport, by bringing athlete Usain Bolt into the debate.
NFL players have been kneeling whilst the national anthem of America is played out before matches, Fox News reported.
The US President has now tweeted a video of the Jamaican athlete from 2012 where he stops taking part in an interview so that he can stand quietly for The Star Spangled Banner.
Trump captioned it: “Even Usain Bolt from Jamaica, one of the greatest runners and athletes of all time, showed RESPECT for our National Anthem.”
Bolt has not yet responded to the tweet.
The anthem controversy erupted around a year ago when then-49ers player Colin Kaepernick ‘took a knee’ for the pre-game anthem rather than stand, in protest at the treatment of black people by police in the US.
Several players have copied the protest in recent games, with more than 200 kneeling during the anthems last weekend (September 23-24), causing Trump’s outrage.
Earlier this week he also tweeted that the NFL need to put a rule in place to ensure players are not allowed to kneel during the anthem.
