Thompson, Miller-Uibo sizzle to world leads, McLeod wins 110mh in Shanghai
Omar McLeod, Elaine Thompson and Shaunae Miller-Uibo were winners at Saturday’s (13 May) Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.
Thompson, who again proved she is a cut above the rest, along with Miller-Uibo, ran world-leading times.
In her second 100m of the season, Thompson separated herself from the field at about 50 metres to cross the line in 10.78, more than five metres ahead of nearest rival American Tori Bowie, 11.04.
“I was happy with my preparation and the way I executed the race today,” said Thompson, who ran a wind-aided 10.75 in Kingston three weeks ago.
“I made a great start and I was able to bring it home. I am pleased with the time. My aim now is to go back home and compete in the Jamaica Invitational later this month,” she added.
Trinidad & Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye finished 4th in 11.24 while Jamaicans Veronica Campbell-Brown, 11.23 and Christania Williams, 11.33secs, were 6th and 8th respectively.
Miller-Uibo, in the women’s 400m, ran a controlled race to take victory in 49.77, the fastest time in the world this year. Natasha Hastings chased her across the line in a season best 50.74.
In the women’s 400m, Jamaicans Novlene Williams-Mills, 51.45, Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby, 51.63 and Stephenie Ann McPherson, 51.97, were 4th, 5th and 7th respectively.
McLeod, in the men’s 110m hurdles, battled with Orlando Ortega of Spain down to the wire, but prevailed in 13.09secs to 13.15secs.
“I didn’t get out that great and that did not allow me to control the race,” commented McLeod.
“I didn’t execute that well. I know Orlando (Ortega in second) is a great competitor, so I’m pleased to win. Every time you go out to the track and win, it is a confidence booster. You don’t want to be defeated as that throws your confidence off,” he added.
Hansle Parchment, who missed the better part of last season with injuries, finished 4th in 13.35secs.
Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis, 10.30secs, was 6th in the men’s 100m dash, won by SU Bingtian of China, 10.09secs.
Jamaican Annsert Whyte ran 50.18 for 7th in the men’s 400m hurdles, which went to Bershawn Jackson in a new meeting record, 48.63
