“Fortune favors the brave” were the words used by Sanjae Lawrence of Petersfield to describe his Class 1 boys’ discus triumph at Champs on Thursday.
Calabar’s Warren Barrett Jr. was favoured to take the event ahead of Kino Dunkley of Munro, however, they finished second and fourth with 53.78m and 52.78m respectively.
Lawrence, who the experts picked to finish third, made the throw of his life – 53.90 metres to take the all important gold medal.
The Petersfield team captain described Barrett as “a very good competitor” but said all he did was to go out with a "mindset and said anything is anything and the fortune favors the brave.”
The victory is extra sweet for the man from Western Jamaica because according to him “I do not train for the discus, so I just went out there to do my best for my school.”
“I am the captain, and the captain have to lead from front,” he added.
After four finals, Petersfield are in sixth position with 13 points.
“This is a very good start for my school as we finished 7th last year and we are hoping we can do better this year,”
Lawrence now turns his attention to the shot put where he is predicted to get the silver medal behind Barrett.
“The discus performance is a very good build-up for the shot put tomorrow where they predicted me to come second so, I will go out there and see if I could change that too,” he told journalists.
