EUGENE – Friday’s 3rd day at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships produced some super sprint times.
The times, however, were aided by strong tail wind.
Canadian Andre De Grasse achieved a historic sprinting double in 9.75 (+2.7) and 19.58 (+2.4) in 45 minutes (and ran a relay before). Trayvon Bromell was second in the 100m in 9.88 and third in the 200m 19.86 (856). Dedric Dukes was also fast with 19.86 (858).
Also sub 10 in the 100m for third place finisher Jarrion Lawson 9.90, fourth Senoy-Jay Givans of Jamaica 9.97 and fifth Kendal Williams 9.98.
Jamaican hurdles talent Omar McLeod won the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.01 (+3.9m/s wind) ahead of Johnathan Cabral 13.22 and Isaac Williams 13.31.
This year’s outdoor championship meant a lot to McLeod. Last year he suffered a pulled quadriceps injury and missed the trip to Oregon. He said this year was his redemption.
“Coming in, I was thinking about it a lot,” McLeod said. “You have a lot at stake and a lot of people depending on you, the team depending on you — but I had to re-evaluate myself. I had to talk to myself and talk to my mom and say, ‘I got to let it go, last year was last year.’ I have to put it behind me.”
Marquis Dendy won the triple jump with 17.71m (+2.4m/s wind). He had a legal 17.50 (+1.2m/s wind) to equal his personal best. Second was Latario Collie-Minns of Bahamas with 17.01 (+3.8m/s wind). Vernon Norwood won the 400m in 45.10 over Marcus Chambers 45.59, while Michael Stigler topped the 400m hurdles in 48.84 ahead of Jordin Andrade 49.24.
Jamaican Kemoy Campbell 13:49.23 was third in the men’s 5,000m, which was won by Edward Cheserek 13:48.67 ahead of Eric Jenkins 13:48.92
Arkansas with McLeod clocked 38.47 to win the short relay ahead of TCU 38.59 and LSU 38.62.
In the 4x400m, LSU 3:01.96 came home ahead of Florida 3:02.48.
Oregon won their second consecutive men team title.
