World champion Tajay Gayle launched his 2021 season on a winning note. Nesta Carter beat Yohan Blake in the men’s 200m at Saturday’s (27 Feb) JAAA Qualifying Series held at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Gayle’s season opener was 8.03m to win the men’s long jump.
Carter (MVP) ran 21.42 to beat Kadrian Goldson (GC Foster College), 21.58 and Yohan Blake (Titans) 21.72 in his heat. Jamoi Jackson (MVP), 21.71 to win heat 5, was third overall.
Ashanti Moore, running unattached, was the fastest in the women’s 100m with 11.61 against a -2.9m/s wind. The next best was Kashieka Cameron (MVP), who finished second in the same heat with 11.73 and Jodean Williams (Racers), 11.87.
Zharnel Hughes (Great Britain/Racers) won the men’s 100m in 10.37 ahead of Oshane Bailey (Sprinter) 10.39 and Oblique Seville (Racers), 10.41 against a -3.8m/s wind.
Michael Stephens (Racers), the winner of heat five in 10.59, finished fourth overall.
Ronald Levy took the men’s 110m hurdles, winning in 13.94 ahead of his MVP teammate Norman Pittersgill, 14.49.
After three false starts in the men’s 60m dash, Asafa Powell and company decided to take no further part in the event.
Roneisha McGregor (UWI Mona) topped the women’s 400m in 52.28, the fastest time in the world this year. Christine Day (Cameron Blazers) finished second in 52.59 and Bahamian Anthonique Strachan (MVP), third in 53.55.
Petersfield High’s schoolboy Antonio Watson ran 46.27 to beat Anthony Cox (Racers) 46.35 and Akani Slaters (Sprinter) 46.93.
Barbadian Sada Williams (MVP) ran away with the women’s 200m in 23.32 to finish ahead of her teammate Stephenie-Ann McPherson, 23.59. Tiffany James-Rose (Cameron Blazers), the winner of heat one in 23.79, finished third overall.
Kimar Farquharson won the men’s 800m in 1:50.81 ahead of Jorge Liranzo (Cameron Blazers) 1:52.81.
Junelle Bromfield was the lone competitor in the women’s 800m, and she crossed the line in 2:11.76.
Chad Wright (Throwers R Us) threw 57.44 in the men’s discus to win.
