HATTIESBURG, Miss. (May 3) – Tori Bowie, a former American world 100m champion, passed away on Tuesday in the United States. Bowie was a well-decorated athlete who had impressive performances in both long jump and sprinting.
She was 32 years old at the time of her death.
“We’re devasted to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away,” confirmed her management team in a tweet.
“. “We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter, and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken, and our prayers are with the family and friends,” the message ended.
Bowie made her mark in the 2017 London World Championships by winning the 100m title and being part of the USA’s gold medal-winning 4x100m relay team. Bowie’s achievements continued in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m. She was also part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m relay team.
The Mississippi native had an outstanding college career at the University of Southern Mississippi. She won NCAA championships in both indoor and outdoor events in 2011 and holds the school record for the long jump, setting her personal best of 6.95m in 2014.
Bowie’s sudden death has shocked the sports community, and tributes are pouring in from all around the world. She will be remembered as a fierce competitor who brought her best to every race she ran.
In 2018, Bowie gets name on road sign as one of her accomplishments.
