GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Track and Field cancelled the 2020 Pepsi Florida Relays in light of the fast-spreading coronavirus.
Several sporting organizations across the world cancelled events, especially those in the next six weeks.
The virus has been reported in more than 2,100 people in 49 states, as well as Washington and Puerto Rico, and has killed at least 48.
“The meet, which was scheduled to begin April 2, was cancelled following a decision by the Southeastern Conference to suspend all athletics activities through at least April 15, due to continuing developments related to the coronavirus (COVID-19),” Florida Track and Field said in a release.
The SEC, in a release earlier, said: “The SEC had previously announced that all competition was suspended until March 30. That suspension of competition has been extended through April 15 and now includes all organized team activities.”
“SEC athletics programs will cease practices, individual and team workouts effective the end of the day Friday, March 13. Team meetings shall conclude no later than 5 pm local time on Monday, March 16,” the SEC release added.
