Duplantis clears 6.16m WR at home meet

The enthusiastic crowd of 10,000 spectators saw top results (Duplantis among them) in nice summer weather for a very special edition of Stockholm’s Bauhaus Galan Diamond League meeting. In total, six meet records, 2 Diamond League records and four world leads made for a spectacular statistical overview.

Meet record breakers will get 0.5 carat diamonds, but above all, Mondo Duplantis set a new outdoor world record of 6.16 meters in the pole vault. Interestingly, it is a Swedish record, as the national federation has a different policy than World Athletics.

Short reviews

Men
100 meters: A clear win for Akani Simbine over Reece Prescod, 10.02 to 10.15 (-0.5w).

800 meters: A surprise victory for Algeria’s Slimane Moula in 1:44.60 to Benjamin Robert’s 1:45.11. Olympic winner Korir was only 5th.

1500 meters (non-DL): Victory for Czech Republic’s Filip Sasinek in 3:36.56 ahead of Brit Matt Stonier’s 3:36.60.

3000 meters: The shock of the season? Swiss-based Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu, who competes for the Athlete Refugee Team, upset Jacob Kiplimo in a sprint finish, 7:29.48 (world lead) to 7:29.55. His previous lifetime best stood at 7:49.31.

400-meter hurdles: Alison Dos Santos dominated from the gun, storming to victory in a world lead of 46.80 seconds, the sixth fastest time in history, also a meet record. The Brazilian won by more than one second from CJ Allen (48.28).

4×100 relay (non-DL): Netherlands clocked 38.70 seconds to win easily.

Long jump (non-DL): Miltiadis Tentoglou was the only athlete to break eight meters with 8.31 meters in round five.

Pole vault: 6.16 meters for Armand Duplantis! The highest vault ever achieved outdoors, improving his previous world outdoor best by one centimeter. Before that, he cleared 6.03 meters; Nilsen and Braz also tried at 6.03 after going over 5.93.

Discus: The new generation dominated with Kristjan Ceh (70.02 meet record) and Mykolas Alekna (69.81 personal best) finishing first and second ahead of Daniel Stahl with 67.57 meters.

Javelin: Anderson Peters returned to 90-meter-plus form with a meeting record of 90.31 to beat Neeraj Chopra, who improved his Indian record to 89.94 meters in the first round. Julian Weber was third in 89.08 in a high quality competition. Jakub Vadlejch got 88.59, the best-ever mark for 4th position.

Women
200m: A brilliant head-to-head between Dina Asher-Smith and Mujinga Kambundji, who were drawn in adjacent lanes. Both were timed at 22.37 seconds with Asher-Smith given the verdict by 0.003.

400 meters (non-DL): Anna Kielbasinska defeated Lieke Klaver, 50.60 to 50.96 seconds.

800 meters: Newcomer Mary Moraa kicked away from Keely Hodgkinson, 1:57.68 to 1:58.18.

1500 meters (non-DL): Linden Hall won by more than a second from Winnie Nanyondo, 4:02.65 to 4:03.66.

100-meter hurdles: Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn kept up her winning ways in 12.46 seconds from Tobi Amusan (12.50) and Nia Ali (12.53).

400-meter hurdles: It was a Diamond League record of 52.27 for Femke Bol (also meet record), the second fastest time in history by a European after her European record of 52.03. Bol won by more than one second again from Rushell Clayton’s 53.90 and Anna Ryzhykova in 54.33.

4×100 relay (non-DL): A Swiss record, world lead and meet record of 42.13 seconds for the team of Frey, Kambundji, Kora and Del Ponte.

3000-meter steeplechase: Victory for Kazakh Daisy Jepkemei in 9:15.77, a French record for Alice Finot, who was second in 9:19.59 and a Ukrainian record for Nataliya Strebkova with 9:24.54 in fourth.

High jump: Eleanor Patterson cleared a season’s best of 1.96 meters. Yaroslava Mahuchikh had to settle for fifth with her opening height clearance of 1.89 meters.

Long jump: Lorraine Ugen won with 6.81meters from Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk with 6.76 meters . Malaika Mihambo and Ivana Vuleta were fourth and fifth with 6.72 and 6.66, respectively.

Shot put: Chase Ealey backed up her win at the US Championships with 20.30 meters and 20.48 in the second and sixth rounds, respectively, to beat Sarah Mitton with 19.90.
