The high jump has been added to the 2016 Digicel Grand Prix Series.
However, there’s no sprint hurdles, an event in which Jamaica has done exceptionally well, over the years, including recently when the country produced a champion and a silver medalist among four finalists at the 2015 Beijing World Championships.
The events to be contested this year are – 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 4x400m, long jump, high jump and discus.
They will be spread across five meets – Western Champs (Feb 6), Youngster Goldsmith National Athletic Classics (Feb 6), Corporate Area Development Meet (Feb 11), Camperdown Classic (Feb 13) and Central Championships (Feb 16) with the GC Foster Classic (Feb 20) being the Grand Finale.
Points will be awarded throughout the series with the top boys' and girls' teams each set to take home $1 million worth of gym equipment, second place $500,000 and third $200,000.
David Butler, Digicel Jamaica CEO, said his company has extended the sponsorship until 2019.
“This year our athletes will be competing for over $16 million in cash and prizes,” said Butler.
Over $1.2 million in athletics scholarships will also be on offer. Athletes breaking the meet record in any of the six meets will be awarded a scholarship, with funds to be made payable to their schools.
Schools will also get cash for every athlete they have in the Grand Prix final. The top male and female team coaches will get $50,000 each
There will also be a text and win competition for schools and the school with most votes will get $1 million to go towards sports development.
