Briana Williams is heading to the Commonwealth Games as a late call-up to the Jamaica team.
The Ato Boldon-coached sprinter didn’t have the Commonwealth Games on her schedule but decided to step in at the last minute to fill the void left in the event due to withdrawals and medical ineligibility.
Jamaica, the powerhouse in world sprinting – especially on the women’s side – are making every effort to field a strong team in the women’s sprints at Birmingham 2022.
Jamaica, led by Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won her fifth world 100 meters title last week, took the top three spots in the women’s short sprint at the World Athletics Championships, and much is expected from the women’s squad at the Games.
News coming out of Birmingham, Kemba Nelson, who was a member of Jamaica’s 4x100m team in Eugene, has withdrawn, and other athletes have tested positive for COVID-19, depleting the women’s 100-meter entries. Shericka Jackson, who won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m in. Eugene has also opted against attending the Commonwealth Games.
Elaine Thompson-Herah is the only member of the silver medal-winning 4x100m team from Eugene who is down to compete in Birmingham.
According to Jamaican journalist Kayon Raynor, Boldon has confirmed that Briana is heading to the Commonwealth Games and should be in action as early as Tuesday, August 2.
