KINGSTON, Jamaica – SAGICOR Group Jamaica says all is now set for the 17th staging of its charity 5k, Sigma Corporate Run, this Sunday in Kingston.
"The physical infrastructure and personnel are in place, the runners are ready, and all the excitement is building," a company release quotes Race Director Alfred 'Frano' Francis.
More than 2,000 volunteers are involved in the logistics of the run scheduled to begin at 7:30 am on Knutsford Boulevard in New Kingston.
Walkers, joggers, competitive runners and wheelchair-bound racers from over 200 companies are set to participate in the family event that is seeking to raise $25 million for Jamaica Kidney Kids Foundation and the Neo Natal Unit at Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run has become the largest 5k road race in the Caribbean and per capita in the world with a mandate to raise funds for children services.
Since 1999, over $146 million has been raised. Last year, more than 22,000 persons registered for the event which generated $21 million, all of which was donated to the selected charities — the Sickle Cell Unit TMRI at the University of the West Indies; Sickle Cell Trust in Mandeville; the Special Care Nursery at the University Hospital of the West Indies; and Jamaica Kidney Kids Foundation.
This year, the run trophy categories include Champion College Group; Champion High School Team Female; Champion High School Team Male; and the Best Non Corporate Group Award.
The overall awards for the Sigma Corporate Run are Best Corporate Run Team Male and Best Corporate Run Team Female.
