PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – World Indoor finalist Michelle-Lee Ahye (Rebirth) impressed in the heats of the women’s 100m on day one of the NGC/Sagicor NAAA Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Craword Stadium on Friday (June 20).  

Ahye was the top qualifier in the preliminaries with 11.13secs to win the second of three heats. The 22 year old finished well clear of runner up Reyare Thomas (Neon Tracker) 11.64) and Zakiya Denoon (Zenith) 11.85. Second fastest on the day was 2006/2010 CAC Games champion Taheisa Harrigan-Scott (BVI) who secured heat three in 11.59 narrowly ahead of Kamaria Durant (Simplex) 11.60 and Aaliyah Telesford (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 11.77. 

Former NCAA 100m medallist Kai Selvon (Air Bon Sonics) took heat one in 11.87. The semifinals are carded for 4:30pm on Saturday (June 21) with the finals later in the evening. 

All the major contenders eased through the men’s 100m prelims with Rondell Sorillo (La Brea) recorded the fastest time of 10.40 in winning heat four. Former World Junior champion Darryl Brown (Rebirth) looked his  usual self in taking heat three in 10.42 with triple Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson (Rebirth) 10.44 and defending champ Keston Bledman (Simplex) 10.46, next fastest athletes. The top 24 advanced to Saturday’s semis carded to run off at 4:40pm. The finals are set for later in the day. 

In the 400m prelims Olympic relay bronze medallist Jarrin Solomon (Memphis Pioneers) recorded the fastest time of 46.13 in winning heat four. Carlyle Roudette (Abilene Wildcats) 46.93 was the only other run 47 seconds. 

Former World Championship bronze medallist Renny Quow (Zenith) 47.16, Dominica’s Ericson Hartault 47.24, Double Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon (Nike) and Zwede Hewitt (Rebirth) 47.48 were next best.  

The 400m event lost some lustre with the withdrawal of defending champion and recently crowned NCAA gold medallist Deon Lendore (Abilene Wildcats) who withdrew because of fatigue. Two-time Carifta boys under 20 champion Machel Cedenio (Simplex) also did not show as a club official indicated that he has a sore hamstring. 

Among the ladies,  2008 World Junior bronze medallist Janiel Bellille (Neon Trackers) clocked a new outdoor pb of 52.63 to take heat three in the fastest time of the day. Former World Youth double silver medallist Allison Peters (USVI) was next best (53.22) with Shawna Fermin (Memphis Pioneers), Domonique Williams (Neon Trackers) 53.70 and Alena Brooks (Memphis) 53.90.  The women’s  (A and B) finals are set for 6:25pm  with the men’s (A and B) to follow at  6:40 pm.
