Kevona Davis, Sachin Dennis and Bouwahjgie Nkrumie were 100m record breakers on Friday’s penultimate day of the 2018 Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.
Dennis’ 10.20, the fastest by a Jamaican youth, rewrote the Championship Class 2 record of 10.29secs, set back in 2014 by St. Jago’s Raheem Chambers.
STETHS’ Davis, who got a very good start and looked smooth throughout, easily beat KC’s Terrique Stennett, who ran the fastest first year Class 2 time of 10.37 and Conroy Jones of STETHS, 10.52.
In the female equivalent, Edwin Allen’s Davis lowered her own record of 11.35 set earlier in the afternoon by stopping the clock in 11.16 (+0.9m/s wind), the third fastest by a Jamaican junior sprinter.
Ray-donna Lee of St. Jago took the silver medal in 11.58 and St.Lucian Julien Alfred of St. Catherine, the bronze in 11.64.
Nkrumie of KC new record mark of 10.79 came in the Class 3 boys’ 100m final. He beat his teammate Jhevaughn Matherson’s 2013 mark of 10.85.
Adrian Kerr, also of KC, finished 2nd in 10.81secs while David Lynch of Calabar picked up bronze with 11.08.
In the highly anticipated Class 1 boys’ final, two of the race favorites Jhevaughn Matherson (KC) and Michael Stephens (Calabar) pulled up, but the former limped across the line in 18.74.
Calabar’s Tyreke Wilson caught JC’s Ryiem Robertson on the line for the win 10.21 to the latter’s 10.28.
Kasheika Cameron (Edwin Allen) was the Class 1 winner in a personal best 11.29 to beat Michae Harriott (Holmwood) 11.44 and Ockera Myrie (Petersfield), 11.45
Tia Clayton of Edwin Allen won the Class 3 girls’ 100m final against a strong field, 11.56secs to her teammate’s Srena Cole 11.70 and St. Jago’s Brianna Lyston, 11.71
Alana Reid of Hydel topped the Class 4 girls’ 100m final in 11.97 ahead of Quaycian Davis of St. Jago 12.31 and Shanise Ellis of Manchester 12.33.
