Stona Tops Stahl, Morales Wins Discus as Caribbean Athletes Shine in Sollentuna

SOLLENTUNA, Sweden, June 14 — Olympic champion Roje Stona led a strong Caribbean showing at the Folksam Sollentuna Grand Prix on Saturday, beating world champion Daniel Stahl in the men’s discus at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting.

Stona, Jamaica’s Olympic discus champion, produced a best throw of 67.79m to take the victory ahead of Germany’s Steven Richter, who reached 67.44m. Sweden’s Stahl, competing on home soil, had to settle for third with 64.88m.

It was a major win for Stona, who again showed his ability to handle elite fields and big names. Beating Stahl in Sweden added another strong result to his growing profile in the event and kept Jamaica at the centre of the discus spotlight.

Cuba’s Silinda Morales also delivered for the Caribbean in the women’s discus. The world bronze medallist won with 62.60m, defeating Sweden’s Vanessa Kamga, who threw 62.16m, and former Olympic silver medallist Kristin Pudenz of Germany, who was third with 61.75m.

Morales’ victory gave the Caribbean another field-event win on a day when throwers from the region made a strong impression.

Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd also featured in the women’s shot put, finishing second with 18.79m. The former world silver medallist was beaten only by Sweden’s Fanny Roos, who won at home with 19.16m.

While Thomas-Dodd did not take the win, her runner-up finish added to the Caribbean presence at the meet and kept Jamaica among the leading nations in the throws.
