TOKYO (JPN): Tokyo 2020 organisers scotched rumours that this year’s Games could be cancelled or postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus.
Several sporting events, mostly in China, have been cancelled or postponed due to the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak in China.
“We have never discussed cancelling the games,” LOCOG said in a statement to the Associated Press, which was mirrored by comments from the IOC.
“Tokyo 2020 will continue to collaborate with the IOC and relevant organisations and will review any countermeasures that may be necessary,” the IOC said.
On Wednesday, 29 January, World Athletics announced the postponement of it’s World Indoor Championships, Nanjing2020.
“The advice from our medical team, who are in contact with the World Health Organisation, is that the spread of the Coronavirus both within China and outside the country is still at a concerning level and no one should be going ahead with any major gathering that can be postponed,” World Athletics said in a release.
The World Health Organization declaration of the novel Coronavirus is at a global health emergency.
Jamaicans Elaine Thompson and Usain Bolt won the women’s and men’s sprint double at the last Olympic Games, Rio 2016. Omar McLeod won the men’s 110m hurdles.
Jamaica’s men’s 4x100m team also took gold.

@Daniel Williams maybe so. However, I would love to see the game go on.
@Nicola Reid u have no idea how long it takes to plan the Olympics
@Peter Arscott use the previous Olympics location! Shouldn’t be that hard to re-organize.
Nicola Reid u have no idea how long it takes to plan the Olympics
Change to where, Japan is not the same as World indoors in China, which is where the out break started, also it seems that most countries are reporting the virus from people, who have travelled or come from Wuhan, Hubei province of China.
Monitor …..the potential risk to spread globally wlli be extreme …if it’s not contained/controlled by that time … 6 months is a long time….
They dont keep the buildings forever
@Alex Hamilton u lick u head it took 7 year to prepare over 30 venues it can’t be change only cancel
@Alex Hamilton impossible because after the Olympics they sold the buildings and pull down some of the venue that they don’t need
I know that maybe all longer but noh body noh wa no Carina virus. So my suggestion is to go with the last 3 or 4 places that hosted the games or a major championship
@Nicola Reid. How could you relocate an Olympic games in a couple of months?
England so I can change my flight dates
Venue can’t change either it keep or not keep
Better to wait until further in the year to decide
Yes the venue should be changed
@Nicolas Smith well if there is no where call it off how do you know there isnt going to be a spread there its better safe than sorry
@Charlene Samuels change it to where?
,yes change the venue dont think it will be safe
Yeah, changing the venue may become a possibility depending on the spread.
Not cancel, but relocate!
Lets wait until about april n lets c hw they contain d spread of this deadly virus.
