World Champs Fact: Jamaica’s 1st World Champion

Jamaica’s Bert Cameron (45.05) won his country’s first World Champs gold medal at the inaugural event in Helsinki, Finland in 1983.

His countrymen, listening to commentary on the BBC, must have been justly proud to hear the former St. Jago High School athlete being referred to as “the boy from Spanish Town”, where the institution is located.

Second and third went respectively, to the USA pair, Mike Franks (45.22) and Sunder Nix (45.24)
