Asafa Powell to run at Meeting de Paris

Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell was forced to withdraw from Friday night’s men’s 100m final at the Puma Jamaica National Senior Championships.

Powell ran 10.15 for second in semi-final 2 to qualify behind Julain Fore, 9.99secs, but on the advise of his doctor, skipped the final.

The athlete’s publicist Tara Playfair issued a statement Friday night explaining the reason.

“Asafa felt severe pain in his Achilles during his semi-final run and went to the meet’s medical team thereafter to have it looked at. After speaking with the Orthopaedic doctor and the doctor on duty he was advised not to run in the final as it could cause further injury,” the release stated.

The release went on to state that Powell is “completely disappointed.”
“He received treatment for the tendonitis and having sat out his last few meets he had hoped this nagging injury would have subsided enough for him to run all the way to the final at the National Trials.”

Yohan Blake won the men’s 100m final in 9.90 ahead of Forte 10.04 and Senoj-Jay Givans 10.05.
Elaine Thompson topped the female final in 10.71 ahead of Simone Facey 11.04 and Jura Levy 11.06.
