Gibson McCook Relays News Press Release
The Chairman and Members of the Gibson McCook Relays Organizing Committee regret to advise loyal track and field fans that because of the unprecedented rise in cases of the COVID19 virus nationally, and Kingston in particular, we have reluctantly taken the decision to once again remove this prestigious 45-year-old track and field staple from the JAAA Calendar of Events until further notice.
Following several meetings of our Committee, a decision was taken that in the interest of our athletes, their coaches and all personnel essential to the successful staging of these Relays, we should hold off on selecting a date until we can further assess the pros and cons of hosting this event in 2021.
The Gibson McCook Relays Organizing Committee will make a further announcement on this matter, on or before April 05, 2021.
We regret this decision but feel certain that track and field in general and GMR fans in general, will understand and support this difficult decision.

Host it without spectator for the good of the athlete
Longing to see some track events ,o lird dis a sinting need fi gone wey it ago
I find it hard to understand why these organizers are pushing for track events when there is a major pandemic killing people, clogging the hospitals and taking people’s livelihood. The world won’t end if you wait…Penn’s Relay which is older than Gibson and Champs isn’t happening for a second year…
To be honest these meets without spectators in jamaica not gonna work be because they are relying on the ticket sales
Foolishness they can host it without spectators
Right
Patricia Daughma, relays are different from individual events. Athletes have to get close. The baton must be passed without sanitising once the race has begun. With as much as 600+ cases per day, Covid is not at all controlled now. Remember how the paper would publish a map every day showing cases? Gone from FB longtime but case numbers are way worse.
There is now a rapid test that can identify asymptomatic cases but not widely and cheaply available yet. This would be useful to ensure safe meets.
Stay Focus.
