In January 2017, TrackTown Canada advised our funding stakeholders in Edmonton and Athletics Canada that it would put the “Classic” on indefinite hold. In response to provincial and municipal government funding pressures and priorities, the Classic will be redeveloped to better maximize the reach of the international one-day invitational format.
Most importantly, TrackTown Canada has made its 2017 priority objective the international bid for attracting the 2020 IAAF World U20 Athletics Championships to the City of Edmonton.
Over its six-year run, the meet featured high-profile Canadians like Olympic High Jump Champion Derek Drouin, Olympic Medal sprinter Andre De Grasse, 800-metre sensation Melissa Bishop, Multi-event Olympic medalists Damian Warner & Brianne Theisen-Eaton and World Champion pole vaulter Shawn Barber among international superstars like Sanya Richards-Ross, Shaunae Miller, Ashton Eaton, Yohan Blake, Justin Gatlin, Warren Weir, Francena McCorory, Jason Richardson, LaShawn Merritt, Nick Symmonds, Wallace Spearman, Joe Kovacs and Luguelín Santos.
We sincerely thank all those funders, partners, volunteers, officials and athletes that were directly involved with the event and for your continued support of this World Class event in the future. We welcome feedback to help future editions of the Classic!
Decisions and updates on the TrackTown Classic will be announced when available.
