Following her 10.76 victory in the women’s 100m finals at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing on Monday, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is now two clockings away from becoming the top sub 10.80 female sprinter, in history. With the 2015 season, yet to be completed and her desire to go faster than her personal best of 10.70 SFP needs two more such times, to match to leader American Marion Jones (13) and three to surpass her.
The triple World Champion and double Olympic gold medallist has won all her titles with sub-10.80 times. She is ahead of Americans Carmelita Jeter (5) and world record holder Florence Griffith-Joyner (4). Fraser-Pryce is the top Jamaican on the list ahead of Merlene Ottey (4) and Kerron Stewart and Veronica Campbell Brown (two each). Former world record holder Evelyn Ashford of the USA also has two efforts below 10.80. Christine Arron of France heads a list of eight women with one posting. The list includes current sprinters Blessing Okagbare, (NGR). English Gardner (USA) and Ivet Lalova (BUL).
Of the seventeen women who have dipped below the mark eight are American (47.1%), four Jamaicans (23.6%). The remaining five are from Bulgaria, China, France, Nigeria and Russia.
SFP will also be seeking to increase the her tally of sub 10.80's in one season. Her present best is three, achieved in both 2013 and this year. She has a chance to add to this season’s number at other meets on her schedule. Jones heads the table with nine postings below 10.80 seconds achieved in 1998 with Griffith Joyner next on four (1988).
