“Champs” in one-day. That’s what this weekend’s (15 Feb 2014) inaugural Corporate Area Athletics Games (CAAG) otherwise called “Urban Champs” is seen to be in the track & field circle.

Also, like Champs, teams from the Corporate Area would only have one relay team per school per class, and 2 athletes per school per event. Unlike Champs, however, the meet will include class 4 for boys.

Jumps are limited to three jumps with the top eight getting an additional jump while throws will take the exact format – three throws with the top eight having an additional throw.

Ricky Martin, Chairman of the organizing committee and the point man at Anthrick Sports Management Group, which is organizing the event, spoke of the importance of the meet.

“I expect all the top schools to showcase all the big stars to make an early statement/preview to Gibson Relays and the upcoming Boys and Girls champs 2014,” he said.

Martin made the comment because they have already confirmed the top 3 teams – Calabar, Jamaica College and Kingston College – from last year Boys Champs.

This mean big names such as Javon Francis, World Championships 1600m relay silver medallist, World Youth 200m champion Michael O'Hara, both of Calabar, along with KC's Zharnel Hughes, the Carifta Games and Pan Am Champs 100m winner, should be on show.

Wolmer’s Girls, St. Andrew High, Immaculate, The Queens School and Alpha are also among the 33 schools to be confirmed already for the meet.

“It’s a qualifier for Boys and Girls Champs and I am appealing to Corporate Jamaica to help to showcase our future stars,” said Martin, whose group is hoping for more in sponsorship.

The CAAG runs off at 8:30am with the girls and boys 4x100m all classes and closes at 5:05pm with the final of the same events. The 4x400m open is set to start at 4:05pm while the sprint medley is set to go 10 minutes earlier.

No Clubs or Institutions will be allowed, which clearly suggested the aim of the meet.
