The Bahamian 10-member team might not be able to make it to Doha 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships because of insufficient funds.

According to Drumeco Archer, president of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA), the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture only provide them with $25,000 – way short of the proposed budget

Archer said his association proposed a $116,000 budget on February 1, 2019. The IAAF World Athletics Championships is set for 27 Sept to 6 Oct.

Sports Minister Lanisha Rolle said that the ministry does not have the funds to fund any sporting federation total budget.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Steven Gardiner are overwhelming medal contenders for the Bahamas.

Olympic Games champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, the overwhelming favourite for the women’s 400m crown, has personal best times of 48.97s in the 400m and 21.74s for 200m. Both her marks are national records.

Miller-Uibo recently won the Diamond League 200m crown but opted to skip the event at the World Championships, despite being the best in the world this year.

Steven Gardiner, who won bronze two years ago, is another medal hopeful for team242. He has personal bests of 43.87s in the 400 m and 19.75 s in the 200 m, both national records.

Team – Tynia Gaither, Anthonique Strachan, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Pedrya Seymour, Steven Gardiner, Alonzo Russell, Latario Collie-Minns, Lathone Minns and Donald Thomas.

  1. Francine Stern Meikle Brown whether they are from Abaco or not is not the issue. This horrific tragedy has affected the whole Nation

  2. Juls Ross but I heard on a talk show that the minister of sports was going and she was taking a few people which would cost like 60 thousand. Why her and crew need to go? Smt

  3. This will be a travesty if the Bahamian athletes cannot compete. I understand the Bahamian government must focus all resources on cleanup and restoration efforts, which they should do. Can the sponsors of the athletes pay the fees? Is that allowed?

Miller-Uibo, Gardiner, and the rest of the team must be on pins and needles–how awful. Definitely not the head space they need to be in before the world championships. Hope they can go as they have earned it.

  4. Unfortunately the sports minister reduced their WC government sponsorship from 100k to 25k. In light of the hurricane it is understandable. I just hope their athletic association can raise the funds from corporate sponsorship. I love watching Shaunae run and would really miss her if the team does not get to DOHA.
