South African Wayde van Niekerk, forced to sit out the 2018 track and field season, believes he can dominate the sport for a decade on his return.
The world record-holder and Olympic champion for 400m underwent surgery after a knee injury sustained during a rugby match last October.
“The focus is now on next year,” said Wayde van Niekerk, who ran a world record 43.03 out of lane 8 at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Wayde van Niekerk believes he will be better than ever on his return
“When I return next year, I want it to be like I never left,” he was quoted by the Evening Standard.
“In fact, I have no doubt that I will be a better athlete than I was before the injury,” said the Olympic and World 400m champion.
“I can refresh my mind and rebuild and the next 10 years I can get back-to-back titles and continue to go from strength to strength.”
