United States President Donald Trump believes this summer’s XXXII Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020, should be postponed by a year.

President Trump, who spoke last week about what should happen with this summer’s Olympics, said: “I would say maybe they postpone it for a year”.

He also added: “I like that better than having empty stadiums all over the place.”

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has caused several uncertainties around the world. Several travel bans, event cancellations and restrictions on public gathering have been imposed across the world.

To date, just under 254,682 confirmed cases worldwide and 10,442 deaths.

On Thursday (19 March), Trump speaking at a press conference, said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has not decided whether to postpone the event.

Trump said the Japanese Prime Minister communicated the news to the Group of Seven (G-7) leaders at a video conference earlier this week.

Trump said of the message communicated by Abe.

“He has told us that he has not made a decision as to what to do.”

“And we don’t know what his decision is, but we would live with his decision.

“It’s a tough situation. They’ve done an incredible job. Japan has done an incredible job on building the venues — getting them built,” said Trump.

The Olympics are scheduled to run from 24 July to 9 August.

  1. U really believe IAAF gonna agree to that? Cuz you are basically saying CANCEL WC and put Olympics in its place.. as much as Olympics carries far more prestige than WC, WC is where the sponsors put most of their money.. hence y they can give out lucrative cash prizes.. they are not going to succumb to IOC

  2. Postpone the FIFA world cup? For what? Olympics? ??? That will NEVER happen, and that, I can guarantee.. and IAAF will not CANCEL their Championship to host Olympics.. cuz if Olympics is held 2021, then World Championship cannot be held..

  3. I would rather listen to the dr and coaches and experts why should anyone listen to some uneducated retarded fool who told about 20k lies since in office it’s easy for none athletes to talk because it’s not their dreams!

  4. I disagree. I think we should expect it to be postponed, however the athletes should stay positive and be ready if it does go forward. Month by month is the best way to monitor this situation in my opinion. BUT I am sure some will disagree with me.

  5. For a year? Can’t be next cuz cuz next year is WC.. and can’t be 2022 cuz that’s FIFA World Cup.. and it doesn’t make sense to have it in 2023 if the following one would be 2024.. so if it cannot happen THIS year, the Olympics would have to be cancelled all together..only logical thing can happen is push it down the year.. but that will have a big negative impact on the athletes going into next year..
