Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association’s (JAAA) executive member, Dr Carl Bruce, is suggesting track and field teams add a COVID-19 compliance person as part of their management set-up.

Dr Bruce, a member of the JAAA medical committee, said such a person would help manage teams’ compliance.

“I am suggesting each team have a COVID compliance person, and they insist on the masking wearing and sanitising and temperature checks,” he said during his JAAA’s virtual calendar conference presentation

Dr Bruce also said it wouldn’t be possible to have 30 heats of any event again during this time.

“The meet organisers need to control and manage the number of athletes,” he said.

“What is that number (per event, per team),” he questioned. “I reached out to our former president (Dr Warren Blake) today, just from a medical standpoint to get what is (a good number), but it’s going to vary, depend on where the competition is and what stadium you are using.”

He also suggested, unlike in the past, schools won’t be allowed to register a club.

There will be no congregation between schools, and athletes must remain in their tents.

“It’s your responsibility to keep athletics alive,” he said while saying international guidelines to three disposable marks per day per person should be used.

Dr Bruce also made it clear that not all meets may get approval. “We may have challenges” but said the JAAA would work very hard with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Sports to try and ensure that as many meets as we possibly can approve.”
