The University of Texas Track & Field team wrapped up the second day of competition at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in second-place on the women’s side (57 points) and with the men in third-place (47 points).
Ashtin Zamzow continued to lead the way for the women, capturing her second title in two days with a win in the heptathlon (5,817 points). Zamzow, who won the javelin title on Friday, outpaced her closest competitor, Lauren Taubert of Kansas State, by almost 50 points. She is the first-ever Longhorn to win the Big 12 heptathlon title.
On the men’s side, sophomore Tripp Piperi won his second-straight Big 12 title in the shot put with a throw of 20.50m/67-03.25 for another top-15 throw in program history. Additionally, Steffin McCarter soared 7.93m/26-0.25 in winning Texas’ first long jump conference title since Marquise Goodwin won three-straight from 2010-2012.
Texas also racked up significant points in the 3,000m steeplechase with Anna McDonald, Meghan Lloyd, Abby Guidry and Marissa Flournoy earning 13 points for the women and John Rice and Alex Rogers going 2-3 (14 points total) on the men’s side.
DAY 2 NOTES
- Georgia Wahl picked up five team points for the Longhorns with a jump of 6.09m/19-11.75 for fourth-place in the long jump.
- Shay Petty cleared 4.07m/13-4.25 to claim the six-spot in the pole vault and earn three points for UT.
- George Patrick finished the decathlon with a sixth-place finish and 6326 points. The sophomore set a new PR in the discus (36.77m/120-08) on his way to earning three team points.
- Elena Bruckner locked down another big five points by throwers with her 15.39m/50-6.00 mark for fourth in shot put.
