Elaine Thompson-Herah

Elaine Thompson-Herah beat Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the women’s 100m at Tuesday’s (6 July) 11th Istvan Gyulai Memorial, known as the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix.

Thompson-Herah took control of the race from midway and pulled away to a comfortable 10.71 victory. The winning time is just one hundredth and a second outside Thompson-Herah’s lifetime best of 10.70.

Thompson-Herah, who was third at the Jamaica Olympic Trials, said, “I did not (expected to run this fast). It’s a surprise.”

“I feel please, it’s close to my PB, I didn’t expect to run that fast, but I am really grateful,” added Thompson-Herah.

Fraser-Pryce, the Jamaica Olympic Trials winner, finished second in 10.82, just edging Marie Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast, 10.86.

Fraser-Pryce is the world leader with 10.63.

In seven 100m clashes between Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah, the latter has won 5-2. Fraser-Pryce’s victories came at the Doha 2019 World Championships and this year’s Jamaica Olympic Games Trials.

Stephenie-Ann McPherson ran an excellent race to win the women’s 49.99 seconds. American Wadeline Jonathas finished second in 50.70s.

American Grant Holloway ran 13.08 to win the men’s 110m hurdles ahead of Orlando Ortega of Spain, 13.15. Jamaican Ronald Levy finished fourth in 13.25.
