Tamari Davis signs professional deal with Adidas

American teenage sprinter Tamari Davis has signed a professional contract with Adidas.

The 16-year-old announced via her social media page on Thursday, 30 January her decision.

“Thank you, @adidasrunning. I’m happy to be in the family,” said Davis.

A student at East Ridge High in Florida, who had several scholarship offers, was quoted as saying “this decision (endorsement) was a great opportunity that was handed to me, and I took it.”

Davis ran 7.19s, a world age-group record, to beat Jamaican Kiara Grant at the South Carolina Gamecock Opener on Friday, 17 January.

The mark lowered the World U-18 mark of 7.24, established in 2007 in Houston by Victoria Jordan. She now holds World age-group records at 14 (7.30), 15 (7.25) and 16 (7.19).

Davis, and Jamaica’s 17-year-old Briana Williams, who recently signed with Niki, enjoyed some great battles in 2018. Williams won the 100m (11.31) to Davis’ 11.36, but the latter topped the 200m 22.48 to 23.15 at the Florida State High School Outdoor Championships.

Tamari Davis, who is expected to be managed by Jamaican Claude Bryan, beat Kevona Davis at the Atlanta Georgia Relays in 2018.

  1. The success rate has been 0% for girls who went pro in track & field before age 18. Briana Williams is very close to 18 (birthday is in March) and is being coached by Ato Boldon and has shown that she’s capable of sub-11, so I’m not worried about her … but what reason is there to believe Tamari Davis won’t stagnate or regress just like all the other under-18 girls who went pro?
