Jamaica’s Doha 2019 world champion Tajay Gayle delivered his best mark this season to win the men’s long jump at Sunday’s (4 July) Stockholm Diamond League.

Gayle, who fouled on his first two attempts, recorded a very good effort of 8.55 meters (+2.3m/s) on his sixth and final jump. He holds the Jamaica record of 8.69m.

He got out to 8.00m on his third try, and despite a +3.4m/s wind, missed time his jump for 6.73m on the fourth attempt.

The fifth jump was better – 8.27m into an unfavourable 2.0m/s wind to get him into the final three jump-off at the Wanda Diamond League in Stockholm.

Gayle was pleased with his performance. “This was a reminder for the future that I can get into those regions, where I was and maybe even better.”

“I’m surprised I jumped that far because my feet have not really been responding and I was tired after the golden meet in Brussels. But I’m very very pleased and very happy with the result,” Gayle added.

Juan Echevarria of Cuba finished second with 8.29m (+1.5m/s wind). Thobias Montler of Sweden ended third with 8.23m, a personal best.

In the men’s 800m, Jonathan Kitilit of Kenya ran a season-best 1:44.68 to beat Great Britain’s Archie Davis, 1:44.72.

Diribe Welteji of Etiophia topped the women’s 1500m in 4:00.68 ahead of Shannon Osika of the United States, 4:00.93.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine cleared 2.01m, the same height as Australian Nicola McDermott, to win the women’s high jump.
