Shaunae Miller-Uibo-Monaco beat Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the women's 200m at the Monaco Diamond League 2021

Shaunae Miller-Uibo won the 200m battle with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at Friday’s (9 July) Herculis EBS Monaco Diamond League.

World 100m champion Fraser-Pryce was off to a quick start and covered Miller-Uibo early. The Jamaican led off the curve, but Miller-Uibo fought back gallantly in the final 50 meters to take victory in 22.23.

Marie-Josee Ta Lou also finished strong to cross the line in second, running 22.25 seconds to Fraser-Pryce’s 22.48.

Miller-Uibo, who did not look smooth as expected, said the work towards full fitness is ongoing.

“We are getting the races in so we can get back in the best possible shape before Tokyo,” she said in her post-race interview.

“The girls out there are running great times at the minute, but there is nothing I love more than a great competition. The current level we see out there is very motivating, and I am very happy to see women on top of the sport now and making the headlines.”

Fraser-Pryce, who ran a personal best 21.79 at the Jamaica Olympic Trials, American Gabby Thomas, the US Olympic Trials winner in 21.62, and world champion Dina Asher-Smith are the main contenders for Tokyo 2020 200m gold.

Rio 2016 Olympic Games sprint double champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and fellow Jamaican Shericka Jackson, who ran 21.82 this season, are also strong medal contenders.

Despite the solid 200-metre field, Miller-Uibo is still favouring the event over the weaker 400m, which is the defending champion.

“We are focusing on the 200m at the minute, and I want something new,” she explained.

  1. Shelley Ann Fraser Pryse you’re blessed I have no doubt at you atall because i know who you’re and what you’re capable of doing congratulations 🎉👏 in advance those who knows they know

  2. 🤔, has Shelly Ann run the 200meters at the Olympics or World Championships? DINA ASHER SMITH from Britian won in DOHA and DAPHNE SCHIPPERS won in ’15 and ’17.

    • Djimon Alando I maybe overreacting but Felix did pull up in the final. I’ve always admired female sprinters from Jamaica. OTTEY…. CUTHBERT….. CAMPBELL-BROWN who beat FELIX in the ’12 Olympics is my point. They’ve always been very talented.

  3. Last week I said if SMU lost this race she’s going to have problems going forward so I was expecting much better from her today. Talou probably would have won if she had leaned so SMU didn’t escape my judgment and still has work to do. I’m not sure of confidence right now.

    • Kadian Mckenzie . I never made it that far due to circumstances which is why I’m a big supporter of kids where I’m from. Anyways! Your attempt to diminish and degrade me will not work because I’m fine with me and proud of my country and it’s athletes.

    • Wayne G Beckford I wasn’t trying to degrade you i asked a question but just as how you critique our athlete, you should be able to take criticism as well. Have a blessed night

    • Kadian Mckenzie . So you are afraid of criticism? I’m a Shaunie fan since her Carifta days , followed her to this day and has said a lot of good about her over the years. I see a reason to say something that I notice about her it shouldn’t be taken as a bashing at all.

  4. Shelly needs to be careful with the number of races she runs between now and the Olympics.
She is now 34 , Miller Uibo is 27.
    Race management Shelly, race management!
