Max Burgin dominated the 800 meters at the Paavo Nurmi Games (WACT Gold, capacity crowd 10,534) with a world lead of 1:43.52 in Turku, Finland on June 14. Just turned 20, the European under-20 record-holder took more than half a second off his personal best (also a UK under-23 record).

Also setting a lifetime best was Tony van Diepen (1:44.24) in second and third Gabriel Tual of France (1:44.30).

In the battle between the Olympic champion and World no.1 in the discus, it was the former who prevailed. Daniel Stahl moved to second on the world list with a 70.62-meter throw as he beat Andrius Gudzius (68.09), Kristjan Ceh (67.76) and Lukas Weisshaidlinger (67.16).

The other big clash of the evening was won by Oliver Helander (coached by Tero Pitkamaki) in the javelin. The hometown winner added more than a meter to his personal best with 89.93 meters to beat Neeraj Chopra, who set an Indian record of 89.30 meters in the  first competition since his Olympic win. Anderson Peters was third with 86.60 meters.

Rasmus Magi set an Estonian record of 47.82 (also European lead) to win the 400-meter hurdles. Nicola Olyslagers won the high jump with 1.96 meters from Elena Vallortigara and Yuliya Levchenko, who both had a best of 1.94 meters. Daryll Neita took the 100 meters in 11.10 (-0.6w) after clocking 11.09 in the heats. Tobi Amusan won the 100-meter hurdles with 12.57 (+0.2w) over Britany Anderson (12.59) and Nadine Visser (12.72).

Other winners were Krista Tervo’s 74.34 meters in the hammer, Almir dos Santos’ 16.90-meter (+0.1) triple jump, Nina Kennedy’s 4.65-meter pole vault, Ayomide Folorunso’s 54.73 400-meter hurdles.

Shanieka Ricketts’ 14.35-meter (+0.1) triple jump, Aaron Mallett’s 13.22 (0.0) in the 100-meter hurdles, Abraham Seme’s 8:14.87 3000-meter steeplechase ahead of German sensation Frederik Ruppert (8:15.58 personal best) and Italian Elena Bellò’s 1:59.84 in the 800 meters. Nigerian Raymond Ekevwo topped the men´s 100 meters in 10.23 seconds (-0.2).
