The Games of the XXXII Olympiad, known as Tokyo 2020, has been postponed, according to an International Olympic Committee (IOC) insider.

According to Dick Pound, an IOC member, the 24 July to 9 August event will not take place as planned.

“Postponement has been decided,” Pound was quoted in the international press, saying. He said this is base on the information within the IOC.

“The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on 24 July, that much I know,” added Pond.

Several athletes, sporting federations and fans have called on the IOC to postpone the games because of the coronavirus, which has killed over 15,300 people worldwide.

The virus caused many qualifying events to be postponed or cancelled in the last two months. Some athletes are unable to train due to the containment measures in their country.

IOC President Thomas Bach, in a letter to athletes on Sunday (22 March), said: “Together with all the stakeholders, we have started detailed discussions today to complete our assessment of the rapid development of the worldwide health situation and its impact on the Olympic Games, including a scenario of postponement.”

“We are working very hard, and we are confident that we will have finalised these discussions within the next four weeks,” Bach added.
