KINGSTON, Jamaica – Michael O’Hara and Jonielle Smith were the sprint heroes on day one of the two-day Supreme Ventures/JAAA Junior Athletics Championships.
O’Hara, who left it late, fought hard in the last 50m to get pass the fast starting Raheem Robinson and Jevaughn Minzie, who himself trailed after the first 40 metres. O’Hara got to the line first in 10.43 ahead of Minzie 10.47 and Robinson 10.59 in the Under-20 men 100m final. The wind was minus 2.6m/s.
Raheem Chambers, who entered in the Under-20 section, false started in the final.
On the women’s side, Smith, who separated herself from the field at the midway stage, crossed the line in 11.71. Kedisha Dallas took second in 11.89 and Sashalee Forbes third in 11.90.
In the Under-18 sections, St. Jago’s Kimone Shaw and Calabar’s Fabian Hewitt, unknown to many, came away the winners.
Shaw battled with her schoolmate Shanice Reid to the line 12.02 to 12.07 while Jeanine Williams, who ran unattached, finished third in 12.18. The wind was negative 2.2m/s
Hewitt won his final in 10.70 ahead of JC’s Waseem Williams 10.82. The wind was negative 2.8m/s
Jaheel Hyde won the Under-20 men 400m hurdles final in 50.50 ahead of STETHS’ pair of Okeen Williams 50.88 and Marvin Williams 51.01.
Genekee Leith of St. Jago took the women’s 400m hurdles final in 58.32 ahead of unattached Daeshon Brown 58.70 and Kimone Green 58.92.
Orlando Smith of STETHS won the Under-18 boys 400m hurdles in 53.18 while Edwin Allen’s Shannon Kalawan topped the girls’ section in 60.18.
Rochelle Frazer of Edwin Allen won the Under-20 discus with 43.83m while Shanice Love of Excelsior came away the winner in the Under-18 section with 49.23.
Glenford Watson of Petersfield took the Under-20 shot put with 53.27 while Warren Barrett of Cornwall was the Under-18 winner with 51.08m.
