100m at Tokyo 2020
Blake and Seville

tokyo 2020 alertsFor the first time in more than 17 years, Jamaica will be without a men’s 100m finalist at an Olympic Games. The last time Jamaica failed to have a 100m finalist was at the Sydney 2000 games.

Then, Lindel Frater made the semi-final, but his 10.46 wasn’t good enough to make the final, won by Maurice Greene of the USA in 9.87.

In Athens 2004, Asafa Powell ran 9.94 to finish fifth in the final. Justin Gatlin, at the time, ran a personal best of 9.85 for victory. Usain Bolt won three straight titles in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Now, at the Tokyo 2020 games, Jamaica’s hopes of a finalist were rest on the shoulders of Yohan Blake and Oblique Seville. Both, however, failed at the semi-final stage.

Blake, who finished behind Usain Bolt in London 2012, ran 10.14 for sixth in semi-final one, won by American Fred Kerley, 9.96 ahead of Canadian Andre De Grasse, 9.98.

Seville, far more inexperienced, ran 10.09 for fourth in semi-final two, won by Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain, 9.98.

American Trayvon Bromell, the overwhelming favourite, also crashed out with 10.00 for third in semi-final two.

The third and final semi-final heat produced the fireworks. Bingtian SU of China ran a national record of 9.83 to take the top spot. He beat American Ronnie Baker, 9.83 PB and Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs, 9.84, a new area record.

  9. I must also say by far this is one of the worst 100m Olympic final I ever witnessed.
There was no excitement, no favorites it was so dull.
I really have a problem with all the men in the same line across cause how can you say
you’re the best in the world and you have to push out your head or chess to show you’re the winner.
There must be some noticeable separation for me
I guess i have been spoil by Usain Bolt thank God for the women
they OUT DID THE MEN BY A FAR.

    • Jennifer Reid I don’t know what your talking about, but I think it was a good race , so you never see Bolt push his out, think you better go and wash over some 100 meters races

    • Jennifer Reid the fact that there was not a favorite made it more exciting. This was one of the best 100m in a long time.

  10. To be honest I am not disappointed cause the men have been struggling for a while now.
However I am so impressed with Seville Oblique I am hoping he get will into the right coach hands who can
    transform him.
I truly believe he is going to be the future for Jamaica.

    • Jennifer Reid So are you saying that Glen mills is not the Right coach for Oblique Seville…that boy will claim is Right in tracks next year at the world games

  11. Blake and Seville did their best and I commend them for that. Seville has age in his favor and displays potential…so I am hopeful. 🇯🇲🇯🇲👏🏽👏🏽🖤💚💛😎
